Description

The Principal Engineer role is a permanent position in the Amey Consulting Structures team in Manchester, supporting the design of large civil engineering and infrastructure projects for clients such as Transport Scotland, Network Rail, National Highways and local authorities.

• Lead technical teams, providing guidance to designers, operational managers, clients and suppliers.
• Oversee design preparation, review calculations, drawings and documentation to ensure quality, cost‑effectiveness and timely delivery.
• Manage project budgets and commercial aspects to achieve financial success.
• Liaise with clients and suppliers, presenting proposals and maintaining strong relationships.
• Lead bid preparation, delivering technical and commercial offers under the direction of the bid manager.
• Act as people manager when required, supervising multidisciplinary teams across locations.
• Develop sustainable bridge and civil‑structure solutions throughout project stages.
• Conduct and review structural analysis, design and assessment calculations.
• Produce and manage technical documents including carbon and cost estimates, 3D models and reports.
• Represent the structures practice in multidisciplinary meetings with stakeholders.
• Apply relevant codes and standards such as DMRB and Eurocodes to complex projects.
• Resolve interface clashes and manage discipline‑specific interfaces.
• Supervise technical teams, ensuring high performance across multiple sites.

Requirements

• Hold Chartered status with ICE or IStructE and possess a degree (BSc, MSc or PhD) in civil or structural engineering.
• Demonstrate deep knowledge of CDM regulations, risk assessment and act as Principal Designer.
• Exhibit strong design and specification expertise, leading project teams effectively.
• Communicate clearly in oral presentations and training workshops to clients and senior staff.
• Bring extensive experience with highway structures and major bridges, including structural behaviour and analysis.
• Proficient in structural analysis software such as Lusas or Midas.
