Controller

Description

• Oversee all accounting operations, including billing, AR, AP, general ledger, payroll, cost accounting, and revenue recognition
• Maintain and improve accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
• Serve as the primary liaison for third-party audits and manage auditor relationships
• Partner with HR and operations on payroll, benefits, and tax compliance matters
• Partner with the CFO on financial strategy, risk management, and long-term planning
• Lead financial reporting and present results to senior leadership and the Board
• Collaborate with project managers on budgeting, forecasting, job costing, and profitability analysis
• Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff (5+ direct reports)
• Ensure compliance with GAAP, FAR, and other applicable regulatory requirements
• Manage indirect cost rates and prepare overhead rate submissions for agencies
• Lead month-end and year-end close processes with accuracy and timeliness

Requirements

• Minimum 5 years of AEC industry experience
• Direct experience working with external auditors
• Strong knowledge of project-based accounting, FAR compliance, and indirect cost rate calculations
• CPA preferred but not required
• Prior experience in an ACEC-member firm strongly preferred
• Experience managing teams with 5+ direct reports
• Hands-on experience with Deltek (any version)
• Ability to operate independently and communicate effectively with executive leadership
• Proven ownership of financial reporting processes
• 12+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 5+ years in a Controller or senior leadership role
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance

Benefits

Salary: $170,000 – $200,000 base (commensurate with experience)

Bonus: Performance-based, typically $10,000–$15,000 annually
