The principal will oversee a diverse portfolio that includes drinking water and wastewater treatment facilities, water resource and conveyance structures, associated administrative, laboratory, and operational support buildings, as well as renovation, rehabilitation, and historic restoration of existing structures.
Key responsibilities include leading design from schematic concepts to construction‑ready documents, reviewing and integrating architectural details for constructability, collaborating with engineering, estimating, project management, and field staff, coordinating with consultants and code officials, conducting existing‑condition assessments, leading renovation and historic restoration efforts, performing construction administration, and supporting cost estimating and value‑engineering activities.
Hazen and Sawyer is seeking an experienced Principal Architect to lead architectural design efforts across the Northeast Region, supporting clients in the water and wastewater sector. The role involves guiding multidisciplinary project teams, overseeing design quality, technical rigor, and integration, and contributing to planning, design, permitting, and construction of facilities that protect critical water infrastructure.
Required qualifications are a Bachelor of Architecture or Architectural Technology degree from a U.S. accredited university, NYS registration or NCARB certification, 8‑10 years of experience in infrastructure or public‑works detailing and constructability, experience with public‑bid projects, deep knowledge of building systems integration, proficiency in codes and sustainable design, and strong leadership and communication skills.
Preferred qualifications include hands‑on construction administration and field coordination, early identification and resolution of constructability issues, strong technical writing, experience with renovations or historic preservation, and a commitment to quality assurance throughout all project phases.
