Description

The Senior Technical Writer – Fusion Systems will support safe, repeatable, and scalable operation of fusion systems by creating and maintaining clear internal technical documentation. The role works closely with operations, engineering, and research teams to translate complex hardware, diagnostics, and experimental processes into usable procedures and reference material for engineers and technicians. Reporting to the R&D Manager, the position is located onsite in Everett, WA.

• Author and maintain internal operations documentation, including system descriptions, operating and maintenance procedures, work instructions, and O&M manuals for fusion systems.
• Collaborate with operations, engineering, and R&D teams to capture system behavior, hazards, and workflows and convert them into clear, technician‑ready documents.
• Develop and refine procedures for system operation, maintenance, commissioning, and troubleshooting, incorporating feedback and lessons learned.
• Create educational and reference materials that support operator and technician understanding of fusion subsystems and diagnostics.
• Perform technical reviews to ensure documentation accuracy, consistency, and alignment with established standards.
• Establish and maintain standardized templates, formats, and guidelines for work instructions across Fusion Systems.
• Prioritize and manage documentation tasks to align with operational schedules, system availability, and experimental timelines.
• Communicate documentation status, risks, and dependencies, identifying gaps and supporting mitigations.
• Contribute to documentation tooling requirements, revision control, and content management system selection.
• Foster a culture of high‑quality operational documentation by developing processes and training for engineers and operators.

Requirements

• 6+ years experience producing operations‑focused technical documentation for complex hardware or experimental systems such as fusion, plasma, power electronics, vacuum, or cryogenics.
• Proven ability to author procedure‑driven documentation (operating, maintenance, commissioning, troubleshooting) for technicians and operators.
• Skilled at interpreting engineering drawings, schematics, electrical diagrams, P&IDs, and system block diagrams into operational documentation.
• Experience working directly with engineers, technicians, and operators to capture as‑built system behavior, constraints, hazards, and lessons learned.
• Strong knowledge of document control practices, versioning, reviews, approvals, and lifecycle management.
• Familiarity with safety‑critical or high‑reliability operations and risk‑mitigation procedures.
• Excellent technical editing, organizational, and communication skills with strong attention to detail.
