We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to own the design, development, and evolution of adaptive traffic‑signal optimization systems. The role sits at the intersection of real‑time systems, optimization algorithms, distributed software, and traffic engineering. The engineer will lead technical direction while remaining hands‑on, working on second‑by‑second optimization logic, edge/cloud systems, and large‑scale deployments in urban environments.
The position involves leading the design and evolution of adaptive traffic‑signal optimization based on industry‑standard Purdue research, developing real‑time decision‑making logic using traffic theory, optimization, and AI, and improving system performance for complex urban grids and multimodal intersections. The engineer will also design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain production‑grade, scalable systems that run across edge devices and cloud infrastructure, handling high‑volume, low‑latency data streams with observability, reliability, and resilience.
Technical leadership includes owning architectural decisions, reviewing code, mentoring engineers, identifying refactoring opportunities, and introducing new technologies while balancing speed, correctness, and long‑term maintainability. The role follows a “run what you build” mindset, participates in on‑call rotations, improves monitoring and alerting, and resolves complex production issues in real‑time systems.
The candidate should hold a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Robotics, or a related field (advanced degrees a plus) and have at least six years of professional software‑engineering experience, preferably with real‑time, high‑concurrency, or mission‑critical systems and proven leadership of complex technical initiatives. Required technical skills include strong proficiency in Python, Go, C/C++ or Rust, experience with distributed systems, real‑time data processing, networking fundamentals, Linux‑based edge computing, and familiarity with traffic‑engineering concepts; exposure to cloud platforms, containers, CI/CD pipelines, monitoring tools, and the DORA Capabilities Maturity Model is also valued. Soft‑skill expectations are strong ownership, decision‑making in ambiguity, clear communication, collaborative low‑ego attitude, and a mentorship mindset.
We are innovators and believers—driven by our mission to eliminate road fatalities through AI-powered intelligent transportation systems. As an MIT-spinoff, our academic roots in research drive our passion to advance smart cities, improve road safety, and solve transportation challenges. Commercialized in 2016 from an idea to revolutionary AI, our ITS technology is live today in 30+ cities across the U.S. and GCC.
