Safety Specialist

Description

The Field Safety Specialist I works under the Director of Safety and Health as an entry‑level safety leader. The role provides technical safety expertise, conducts observations and assessments, and advises lines of business on safe work practices. Over time, the specialist is expected to guide 10‑35 field employees daily and influence the overall safety culture.

Key duties include interpreting regulations, collaborating with operations to implement safety‑supporting work strategies, and developing corrective action plans to eliminate hazards. The specialist also leads incident investigations, delivers training, and partners with other safety professionals to foster a sustainable safety environment.

• Determine compliance with laws, regulations, and standards using judgment and relevant information.
• Interpret regulations, procedures, and standards consistently and practically.
• Collaborate with operations to implement safety‑supporting work strategies.
• Identify, propose, and execute corrective action plans to eliminate safety risks.
• Create and sustain a safety‑focused culture, conditions, and practices.
• Partner with safety professionals to provide insight and coach on correction plans.
• Participate in, facilitate, and conduct incident/accident investigations and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
• Identify training needs, develop programs, and instruct according to OSHA/DOT/state regulations.
• Build productive relationships with field staff, supervisors, managers, and senior leaders to strengthen safety leadership and practices.
• Engage employees and leaders to increase safe behaviors, adherence to rules, and proactively identify barriers.
• Lead escalation briefings with senior leaders alongside other safety specialists.
• Inspect equipment, structures, or materials to determine causes of errors or defects.
• Perform daily safety observations with face‑to‑face interaction.
• Maintain professional demeanor and stay calm under pressure.

Requirements

Candidates must possess strong OSHA recordkeeping skills, solid organizational abilities, and proficiency with Microsoft Office tools. A bachelor's degree in health and safety or a related field, 3‑5 years of transmission line construction experience, and certifications such as OSHA instructor, CUSP, or CSP are preferred. A valid driver’s license and the ability to work in a non‑traditional office setting are required.

• OSHA, MSHA, and Medic First Aid instructor certification preferred.
• OSHA 10‑hour and 30‑hour (or equivalent) instructor credentials.
• Obtain CUSP before advancing to next career level.
• Ability to communicate safety expectations through onboarding and orientation.
• 3‑5 years of transmission power line construction experience preferred.
• BA/BS in health and safety or related field strongly preferred.
• Ability to attain Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification.
• Journeyman lineman or certified high‑voltage electrician.
• Working knowledge of OSHA 1910 and 1926 recordkeeping.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid driver’s license.
