The supervisor also ensures a safe working environment and manages the overall control of employees and contractors on the site.
Working closely with the Emergency Response Manager and other key team members, the supervisor actively oversees the successful execution of assigned projects. Responsibilities include scheduling personnel, equipment, and related resources, coordinating project flow, and proactively communicating issues to relevant parties. Health and safety duties involve managing all safety meetings, participating in GFL’s safety program, and training employees on safety issues. The supervisor adapts to changing project or customer circumstances by developing cost‑effective contingency plans that align with project guidelines and desired outcomes. Building and strengthening relationships with customers and subcontractors, as well as troubleshooting and effective communication, are essential for sustaining project success.
Ensuring the highest compliance with occupational health, safety, and environmental legislation is a core responsibility throughout all project phases. The role requires hands‑on versatility, including supervising work, operating equipment on‑site, consulting with customers, and executing contingency plans in a timely manner. Additional duties may include supporting operations with quality control, process audits, and other complementary tasks while adhering to organizational policies and promoting a harassment‑free workplace.
Candidates must hold a post‑secondary diploma or degree in a related field and have a minimum of four years’ supervisory experience in spill response, clean‑up, and remediation. Required knowledge includes project coordination, excavation equipment, and a solid understanding of OHS and environmental legislation. The role demands strong problem‑solving, communication, and interpersonal skills, the ability to travel throughout Ontario, a valid G‑class driver’s licence, and First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain); bilingual abilities are considered an asset.
