The Customer Engineer acts as the primary technical consultant for a large transit agency in the Baltimore Metro area. This role involves providing hands‑on assistance, troubleshooting, and development work on the client’s CAD/AVL systems while staying current with emerging technologies. The engineer works on‑site Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend availability, and reports to the Manager of Customer Engineering.
Key duties include tracking and resolving customer issues, conducting both in‑person and remote meetings and training sessions, and delivering on‑site vehicle support for hardware and software solutions. The engineer manages maintenance agreements, installs standard upgrades and patches, and creates development reports, FAQs, and knowledge‑base articles. They also lead workflow and software configuration sessions, prioritize competing tasks, and participate in a compensated on‑call rotation for after‑hours support. Continuous assessment of system health and consultation on process improvements are essential to drive better adoption of Vontas solutions.
Successful candidates possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, a professional demeanor, and the ability to travel up to 25 % of the time, including domestic and international trips. Required qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline or an equivalent combination of education and at least five years of relevant experience, along with strong troubleshooting, networking, and computer‑hardware expertise. Proficiency with the MS Office suite, Remote Desktop, Command Prompt, and PowerShell is mandatory, while knowledge of public‑transportation CAD/AVL systems and SQL/Oracle databases is preferred. Physical demands involve prolonged desk work, occasional work at heights, lifting up to 25 lb, and extensive hand‑wrist dexterity.
