You will be based in the R&D function at the Preston Global Technology Centre, helping to develop new products, evaluate materials, and improve manufacturing efficiency—activities that directly support Sika’s transformation towards net‑zero and better customer outcomes.
As an R&D Apprentice, you’ll start your journey by supporting the day‑to‑day running of the laboratory before progressing into hands‑on lab work which will involve product testing, product application, and ultimately synthetic chemistry work. In the second half of the apprenticeship you will be designing experiments, analysing data, and seeing your industrial and academic training come to life in a real‑world setting.
A background or degree in chemical sciences is not required and does not provide an advantage for this position.
The apprenticeship leads to a Level 6 Scientist Degree Apprenticeship in Chemical Science (BSc (Hons)) awarded by Manchester Metropolitan University, delivered via blended distance learning with weekly online sessions and an annual five‑day skills boot camp.
During the apprenticeship you will develop a strong understanding of industrial R&D, project management, and commercial strategy, as well as hands‑on experience with safe chemical handling, polymer synthesis, analytical techniques such as FTIR and gas chromatography, and formulation and performance testing of compounds.
We are looking for candidates with an interest in science, especially chemistry, clear communication, an enthusiastic teamwork attitude, and a passion for continuous learning. Minimum requirements are five GCSEs at grade 4 or above (including Mathematics and English) and at least 104 UCAS tariff points, comprising three A‑levels (one must be Chemistry grade C) or an equivalent Level 3 qualification such as a BTEC Extended Diploma (Scientific Discipline) DMM or higher.
Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, you will be eligible to apply for other positions within Sika.
The role starts on 1 September 2026 with the course beginning 22 September 2026, offering a salary above the UK Real Living Wage, Monday‑Friday 8 am‑4 pm working hours, and a fixed‑term contract of 48 months.
Benefits include 25 days holiday (rising to 28 days with service) plus bank holidays, a company pension contribution of up to 10 %, private healthcare for you (with optional family cover), group life cover at 6 × annual salary, global income protection, enhanced maternity and paternity pay, a staff discount platform, Cycle‑to‑Work scheme, dedicated service awards, and discounted Sika products.
