The Chief Inspector is a senior, field‑based role that leads and supervises construction inspection activities on CTDOT highway, bridge, facility, and railroad projects. Acting as the primary field authority, the inspector ensures contractor work complies with project plans, specifications, codes, safety regulations, environmental permits and agency standards while supporting the Resident Engineer in complex capital projects.
- Oversee construction inspection for highway, bridge, facility, and rail projects, ensuring adherence to plans, specifications, codes, safety and environmental requirements.
- Identify non‑conforming work and coordinate timely corrective actions.
- Prepare daily inspection reports, photographs, and quantity calculations; verify contractor payment quantities and schedules of values.
- Witness material testing, special inspections, and manufacturer‑required testing; review RFIs, submittals and shop drawings.
- Coordinate with Resident Engineer, contractors, designers, CTDOT staff, railroads, utilities and municipalities; participate in project meetings and resolve field issues.
- Support change order and extra‑work evaluations through field verification and technical input.
- Supervise, mentor and assign work to inspectors and field technicians to ensure coverage and documentation.
- Develop and verify punch lists; assist with commissioning, turnover and final closeout documentation.

The position requires year‑round field work in active construction and railroad environments, including traversing uneven terrain, climbing ladders, accessing structures and working at heights. Inspectors may also perform office tasks and must be prepared for varied weather conditions and occasional night, weekend or off‑hour assignments.
- Minimum: 5 years field inspection experience plus PE, CCM or EIT, or 10 years experience with NICET Level IV certification.
- Preferred: prior CTDOT chief inspector experience, railroad project background, vertical construction knowledge, certifications (ACI, NETTCP, ATSSA, OSHA), familiarity with AASHTOWare/COMPASS, valid driver’s license and flexibility for nights/weekends.
